No, you aren't missing any DLC as there is none available yet. War bear mounts and the bear unit are very very strong vs them, and even prevent them from running away to come back again. If you are losing to 10 units of trolls I have no idea how to advise you in your campaign, Trolls are incredibly easy to rout and shoot over your infantry, especially with Kislev. Case in point, Hellseekers of Slannesh (which are anti-cav: cav) get destroyed by war bears, most heroes and lords (if not all) can get on war bears. Most factions do not have versatility in their units.īears are not that strong? They roflstomp any unit but premium anti large units. "Most factions have useful boosts and unit buffs" so do Kislev. Technology is about as helpful as most factions, but yeah the one thing they could use is a little more of it or a reduction in turns for some of the less helpful techs. They are answers to your anti large, sustainability, and frontline wiping issues previously mentioned. "Agent is so basic and offer no bonuses" OH dear, looks like you are widely underutilising one of if not the strongest part of Kislev, the Partriach and Ice Wizards. They get a buff when running away to melee defence AND speed, and retreat automatically which is something Kislev needs you to put thought and battle mindfullness into.) (Never happened with skaven and cheap units. Use settlements, pull out units that are in the final third of their "By our Blood" buff, while they are unbreakable. Many hybrid missile / melee units to counter large threats, if it is horse or 50ft demon.Įntire frontline being destroyed after major battles? Thats mostly fine, if the battle was THAT major you should either have support, a garrison, or no enemy left to threaten the participating army, theres also the replenish option for land battles. Not that expensive if you know what to recruit and don't just 20stack because you have army slots available. Bears are not that strong and it's the only unit.Īfter winning the battle (enemy has 10 units of trolls of course!) enemy retreats and only HP was taken down during the battle so after the battle his trolls are full HP and here we go again. I don't mind weak factions but faction that mainly fights Chaos which has a great rooster of large units so it doesn't make sense to me. Most factions have bonuses for movement on the map, units boosts and their agents are actually useful. Never happened to me before even with skaven and cheap units.Īgent are so basic and offer almost no bonuses. Most units are hybrid but get slaughtered by large units so thier missiles are useless.Īfter every major battle most of my frontline gets almost destroyed and need to recruit new units after each battle. Originally posted by Stinky:Where to begin.Įxtremely expensive infantry with no anti large. Their unit roster is not their issue, at all. They're the prime target for many Chaos, Moulder, Greenskins, Drycha, even Vlad the dad will come for you. Kislev only issue, is it's placement on the map. Nurgle was the only faction that struggled versus large targets pre-WoC update. Kislev has no issues with larget targets. Not to mention, for every faction the best way to deal with large targets, is ranged armor piercing. And generally large targets have the speed and mass to pull away from spears / Halberds. The AI will try it's best to pull away from any dedicated anti large spear unit's with it's large unit's. No anti large on infantry? Since when was that ever a selling point for infantry? You don't bring spear/halberds for their anti large bonus. I win the campaign on legendary but it was really annoying one because of the anti large. Originally posted by Stinky:What about end game? Those archers are pretty useless against armoured targets and bears can't do it on their own. “Generations of Maine lobstermen have worked hard to protect the sustainability of the lobster fishery and they have taken unprecedented steps to protect right whales - efforts that the Federal government and now Seafood Watch have failed to recognize.” Janet Mills, a Democrat, said in a statement. “Seafood Watch is misleading consumers and businesses with this designation,” Gov. Maine Democrats and Republicans blasted Seafood Watch for its rating. Instead, the union will focus on litigation over other rules intended to protect the whales. In August, the Maine Lobstering Union dropped part of its lawsuit against the restrictions, according to the Associated Press. With fewer than 340 right whales left, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a seasonal ban on lobstering gear in a nearly 1,000-square-mile area off New England to try to protect the whales. It’s unclear if the red rating will have any impact on the state’s $1 billion lobster industry. The group issues other ratings such as “best choice” if it deems the fisheries well managed or “good alternative” advising consumers to buy the product but that they should be aware of how the species is “caught, farmed or managed.” Seafood Watch is a program of the Monterey Bay Aquarium that describes itself as “working directly with businesses and governments around the world - increasing both the market demand for, and a reliable supply of, sustainable seafood.” management measures do not go far enough to mitigate entanglement risks and promote recovery” of the whales. federal regulators have imposed new fishing gear guidelines to try to help protect the species.Ī red rating from Seafood Watch recommends that consumers “take a pass on these for now,” and the group said in a statement that “Canadian and U.S. and Canadian lobster industries, saying they aren’t doing enough to protect the North Atlantic right whale. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch gave a red rating to the U.S. California-based Seafood Watch this week issued a recommendation to avoid Maine lobster, drawing the ire of Maine politicians. Some parents even use lost teeth as a means to guide kids to desirable career choices. If they don't throw the teeth straight up or down, their permanent teeth may grow in crooked, according to local myth. Lost teeth are thrown into the air in the Middle East and Japan, but kids in Japan can't just casually toss their teeth. Magical mice in South Africa and Colombia find teeth under pillows or in slippers, while the Filipino Tooth Rat picks up teeth from windowsills. The mouse takes the tooth, drinks the water, and leaves a few coins for the lucky boy or girl to discover in the morning. Children in Sweden and Argentina put their teeth in a glass of water, according to Delta Dental. Today it's a mouse, and not a fairy, that leaves money or gifts for children in many parts of the world, including France, Mexico, Spain and Peru. Eventually, mice made things easier for children by retrieving the teeth in the middle of the night, rather than waiting for kids to put teeth in a mouse hole. People in some cultures believed that offering a lost tooth would increase the likelihood that the child's permanent teeth would become just as strong as rodent teeth. Placing a lost tooth in a mouse or rat hole may have been intended as a sacrifice to the resident rodent. Throwing the tooth between the legs, on a roof or into a fire.Townend discussed several ways cultures marked the important transition, such as: The loss of a child's tooth was as much of a milestone hundreds of years ago as it is today. The gruesome story not only introduced the concept of hiding lost teeth under a pillow, but also established the fairy's role in the entire process. The fairy turns herself into a mouse, knocks out all of the king's teeth, and then hides them under his pillow before eventually killing him. After spending years imprisoned by the king, the queen defeats her captor with the assistance of a friendly fairy. The violent story centers around a queen who avenges her husband's death by targeting the evil king of a rival kingdom. The 17th-century French fairy tale "La Bonne Petite Souris" (the good little mouse) is thought to have been the inspiration for at least part of the tooth fairy myth. How did the winged woman with the strange fascination for teeth get to be so popular? It all started with a scary French story. Most kids would scream in terror at the thought of a stranger in their rooms at night, unless that midnight visitor was the tooth fairy, of course. You should also view the predicted segmentation, and annotate pixels that are not currently segmented properly.Ĭontinue until it seems that additional labels do not change the results, or a subset of the pixels begin “flipping” between CHO cell and background. Areas of high uncertainty will be aqua-blue, so annotating those areas will be most beneficial to training the program which pixels belong to which class. Toggling the Segmentation and Uncertainty views provides real-time feedback that can guide the labeling process. This outcome is promising considering this classification was determined by 1 feature and 1 pixel each for the CHO and background labels.Īdding more labels, one pixel at a time, we continue to refine the segmentation. Activating Live Update reveals the segmentation looks similar to the results from thresholding. In the next image, the annotation color of the CHO cell is yellow and the annotation color of the background is green. Using a brush size of 1, we click a single pixel from each class: one within a single CHO cell and the other in the surrounding background. The image below shows how closely we must view individual cells before the pixels of the image become clear. To label one pixel at a time, we’ll need to zoom in far enough to resolve the individual pixels in the image. too much information about any given area can cause classification to do poorly in other slightly-dissimilar areas. We recommend creating labels for each class one pixel at a time, rather than by making scribbles, to minimize the chance of over-fitting, i.e. We will begin here by labeling pixels for two classes: a background class and a CHO cell class. Zoom-in far enough that the grid is no longer visible. The keyboard shortcut Ctrl-D will show the grid Ilastik uses to partition the image for processing. Some shortcuts that may prove useful are: Open ilastik, load an image, and seek out a cell that looks representative of the population. This annotation creates what is referred to in machine learning as a training set. ilastik provides a user interface for labeling, tagging, and identifying the objects of interest within an image. The machine-learning implemented by ilastik requires user annotation about what is background and what is a CHO cell before it can automatically make this determination across a set of images. These same patterns can be detected with the machine-learning algorithms within ilastik. The CHO cells within the DIC image are obvious to the human eye, because we can discern that each cell is defined by a characteristic combination of light and dark patterns. Ilastik employs pixel-based classification and complements CellProfiler. But let’s pretend for a moment we didn’t have that option… Now, note that there is a module, EnhanceOrSuppressFeatures, that is specifically capable of transforming DIC images into something that is readily segmented. While these fragments could be useful for simple cell counting, most metrics of morphology will be inaccurate. Thresholding renders the CHO cells into moon-like crescents. There is therefore no true foreground for these cells based solely upon an intensity histogram. The goal will be to identify individual Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells and the regions they occupy.Ī straightforward thresholding of this image yields poor results, because the cells have almost the same pixel intensity values (and sometimes even darker!) as the background. Now, let’s take a look at how ilastik can be used together with CellProfiler! DIC conundrumĬonsider segmenting DIC images, such as those within the imageset BBBC030. ilastik is an open-source tool built for pixel-based classification, and, when combined with CellProfiler, the range of biology that can be quantified from images is greatly expanded beyond monocultures of monolayers to include increased complexity such as tissues, organoids, or co-cultures. Thankfully, machine learning, particularly pixel-based classification has yielded powerful techniques that can often solve these challenging cases. For instance, when the biologically relevant objects are defined more by texture and context than raw intensity many classical image processing techiques can be foiled DIC images of cells are a common biological example. However, despite the many problems CellProfiler can readily solve, certain types of images are particularly challenging. Peruse the documentation on the IdentifyPrimaryObjects module, for example, to get a sense of these, e.g., thresholding, declumping, and watershed. CellProfiler is capable of accurate and reliable segmentation of cells by utilizing a broad collection of classical image processing methods. Optimistic bias has been demonstrated across a wide variety of positive and negative events, with most work focusing on health problems such as lung cancer, HIV infection, and alcoholism (for reviews see Helweg-Larsen & Shepperd, 2001 Hoorens, 1993 Klein & Weinstein, 1997). Subsequent work has attempted to evaluate the prevalence of this bias as well as its determinants and moderators. As noted later, optimistic bias has been more frequently defined using the comparative definition above due to greater methodological ease. Other terms representing the same construct include "unrealistic optimism," "illusion of invulnerability," "illusion of unique invulnerability," "optimism bias," and "personal fable." It is also possible to be optimistically biased by being overconfident about the objective chances of experiencing a positive event (or avoiding a negative event), irrespective of how one's chances compare with those of one's peers. Because a majority of individuals in a group cannot be above (or below) the mean unless the distribution is highly skewed, these findings represented a bias at the level of the group. The bias was first demonstrated by Weinstein (1980), who reported that a majority of college students believed their chances of events such as divorce and having a drinking problem to be lower than that of other students, and their chances of events such as owning their own home and living past 80 years of age to be higher than that of other students. “Although unrealistic optimism prevails in the population,” the authors conclude, “it is not a recipe for maximizing well-being.Optimistic bias is commonly defined as the mistaken belief that one's chances of experiencing a negative event are lower (or a positive event higher) than that of one's peers. The benefits of extra optimism then have diminishing returns, and increasing costs. But at a certain point, it seems to become maladaptive. So, are optimists happier? A bit of optimism can indeed have benefits in terms of resilience. Being cautiously optimistic generates the greatest sense of well-being In general, the paper finds that people who hold false beliefs – whether positive or negative ones – have a lower sense of well-being and life satisfaction than those who are cautiously optimistic. That’s likely because they underestimate the likelihood of bad things happening, for example smoking-related illness, and thus engage in risky activities. Interestingly, the study found that the financial optimists are also more likely to smoke. And these suboptimal outcomes have a negative influence on well-being. More generally, trying to make plans based on inaccurate beliefs (either too positive or too negative) also leads to worse outcomes than correct expectations. This, in turn, leads to a drop in their sense of well-being. Unrealistic optimism and distressīut why might optimists experience this distress? The authors propose that a sense of disappointment gradually begins to overpower their optimism. They tend to have a negative outlook on things, and when things go badly, that only reconfirms their beliefs. Why pessimists might experience this distress is perhaps a bit obvious. Moreover, the respondents with the most pessimistic expectations experienced a 37% higher level of psychological distress than the realists for optimists, this figure was 12%. That figure was 14% for the most optimistic people. People with the most pessimistic expectations had a 22% reduction in their long-term well-being. The measurement they used was the subjects’ financial expectations versus their actual financial results, over a period of 18 years. The researchers found that people who misjudge the future, either too optimistically or too pessimistically, have a lower sense of well-being than realists. Are optimists happier? Cautiously optimistic vs. The respondents also answered questions about their general sense of well-being and life satisfaction, via survey tools such as the General Health Questionnaire. Likewise, it asks about their current financial situation, compared to one year ago. The survey asks, for example, whether respondents expect their financial situation a year from now to be better, worse, or about the same. This survey consists of a questionnaire covering topics such as a household’s economic activity, health, and finances. The researchers of the present study used a sample of 1,601 people who took part in the British Household Panel Survey from 1991 to 2009. 5 Being cautiously optimistic generates the greatest sense of well-beingĪ handy optimism definition is “the generalized perception that events in one’s life will turn out well.” Pessimism, on the other hand, can be seen as a fear of future events, often accompanied by anxiety, depression, and other stress-related conditions.2 Are optimists happier? Cautiously optimistic vs. |
